What Is Acrostic Jewelry?

The Secret Language Hidden in Gemstones

What if your jewelry could say something only you knew was there?

Long before texts, DMs, and even love notes tucked into pockets, jewelry offered another way to send a secret message. In the 18th and 19th centuries, acrostic jewelry turned gemstones into a private language, using the first letter of each stone's name to spell a word, name, or sentiment.

A colorful gemstone ring might look simply beautiful to everyone else. To the person wearing it, however, it could quietly say DEAREST, REGARD, or even the name of someone they loved. And more than two centuries later, the idea feels surprisingly modern.

What Is Acrostic Jewelry?

Acrostic jewelry uses a sequence of gemstones whose first letters combine to spell a word or message.

One of the best-known examples is REGARD:

Ruby
Emerald
Garnet
Amethyst
Ruby
Diamond

Set those stones together in a ring, brooch, bracelet, or pendant and you've created a message hidden in plain sight.

Another famous combination is DEAREST, traditionally represented with stones such as:

Diamond
Emerald
Amethyst
Ruby
Emerald
Sapphire
Topaz

To anyone unfamiliar with the code, it's simply a beautiful piece of multicolored gemstone jewelry. Once you know the secret, it becomes something much more personal.

A Little Jewelry History

Acrostic jewelry became fashionable in Europe around the late 18th and early 19th centuries and is particularly associated with the romantic jewelry traditions of the Georgian and Victorian eras. At a time when social conventions could make open displays of affection more complicated, jewelry became a wonderfully discreet form of communication. A jewel could carry a declaration of love, affection, friendship, remembrance, or devotion without saying a word.

The concept also fit perfectly into an era fascinated with symbolism. Flowers had meanings. Colors had meanings. Gemstones had meanings. Even the way jewelry was worn could communicate something about the wearer.  Acrostic jewelry took that symbolism one step further by turning the gemstones themselves into letters.

More Than Just "REGARD" and "DEAREST"

Romantic words were popular, but there's no reason the idea has to stop there.

An acrostic jewel can represent a:

  • First name

  • Family name

  • Child or grandchild

  • Couple's initials

  • Meaningful word

  • Anniversary

  • Private joke

  • Personal mantra

  • Place with special significance

That's part of what makes the concept so appealing today. You can borrow the secret language of antique jewelry while creating something completely your own.

What Would Your Jewelry Say?

This is where it gets fun!

Imagine creating a necklace that secretly spells a child's name, a ring that represents the members of your family, or a bracelet whose gemstones spell a word you want to carry with you every day.  Not every letter has an obvious gemstone, which is actually part of the creative challenge. There may be several possibilities for a single letter, allowing you to choose stones based on color, durability, meaning, availability, or simply which combination looks the most beautiful together.

You can also create your own version of the tradition rather than following historical gemstone combinations exactly. After all, if the message is yours, the code can be yours too.

Birthstones Meet Secret Messages

There is another modern way to play with the idea: combine acrostic jewelry with birthstones.

Instead of literally spelling a word, a custom piece can use gemstones to represent the people in a family. A pendant might include the birthstone of each child or grandchild. A ring could combine the birthstones of two partners. An anniversary piece might incorporate both birthstones along with a diamond or another meaningful gemstone.  Technically, it may not follow the traditional acrostic formula, but it carries on the same idea: jewelry that means more than what you see at first glance.

Create Your Own Secret Message

One of the most interesting things about acrostic jewelry is that you don't have to find an antique piece containing exactly the right message.  You can create your own.

At Water Street Jewelers, our custom jewelry process gives you the opportunity to choose gemstones, colors, settings, and design details that have personal meaning. We can also help you explore ways to incorporate existing stones or jewelry you already own into a new design.

Maybe it's a name.

Maybe it's a word only two people understand.

Maybe it's your children, your anniversary, or a reminder you want to keep close.

To everyone else, it's a beautiful piece of jewelry but you'll know what it says.
